Not only does peeling paint make an otherwise beautiful bathroom look bad, it serves as a breeding ground for mildew and bacteria.

The primary causes for peeling paint? Peeling or bubbles begin to appear when you start painting in high humidity or when paint is applied over built up water and soap scum. Typically around the thing you use every single day – shower, skin and toilet.

Repairing peeling paint on the bathroom ceiling or walls can take a lot of time, but it’s not very difficult.

•  Begin to remove peeling paint with a putty knife. This will make the surface uneven.
•  Make sure you wear protective eye gear and a dust mask. This prevents dust particles from getting into your eyes or your lungs.
•  Use a fine-grain sandpaper to sand the area where you removed the paint blisters. Brush off any dust.
•  Be sure to remove flaking paint in all areas. The only paint left on the wall should be firmly stuck to the wall.

•  Use a patching compound to even out the bathroom walls and the ceiling.
•  Apply it in a thin layer. Use a putty knife for this process.
•  When the first coat is dry, you can apply a second coat. Allow it to dry overnight.

•  Use an oil-based primer for great results in your bathroom – you won’t get any more peeling or blister, but the smell will be stronger than with a latex primer, so make sure you can vent out the bathroom out while it’s drying.
•  Prime the area you have prepared with a brush or small roller.
•  Allow the primer dry completely.

•  When the primer is dry, paint your bathroom with your preferred color.
•  For bathroom painting, be sure to choose a gloss or semi-gloss finish. These paints don’t absorb moisture like other paints do. In addition they won’t peel off or flake over regular bathroom usage. A high-gloss eggshell may work, but going lower than that is risky.
•  If your adamant about a flash finish, it may be worth spending a few more dollars and procure a good paint that will give your bathroom that sharp finish that flat paints typically provide.
•  Some paints are mildew resistant and allow for easier cleaning.
